Momentum Builds as Another US State Lottery Goes Online
Mega Millions and Powerball will soon be available in one more US state after Mississippi announced the launch of a new state lottery. As well as a state-specific lottery game, it will include the world’s richest lotteries, with all three available online via the official lottery website.
Mississippi is the 44th state to launch an official lottery
Mississippi is one of the last states to launch its own official lottery, with more expected to follow suit following the recent legalisation of online gambling in the United States. It will also be the seventh state to offer online lottery, although many more currently have plans to offer online lotto sales in the near future.
The state has formed the Mississippi Lottery Corporation (MLC) to oversee the launch and management of the new state lottery, which will be run via a state-wide network of retail terminals linked to an dedicated online lottery site that will also offer instant win games.
It will be the seventh state lottery to offer online sales
The new Mississippi state lottery was announced in 2018 and laws permitting its establishment were passed the same year. It is expected to launch in time for Christmas, with December 1st pencilled in for the launch of retail and online lotto sales.
Unlike most states that already have an official lottery, Mississippi has moved quickly to legalise online gambling, including sports betting, with its new lottery coming later.
Lottery funds will support education in Mississippi
The first $80 million raised from official state lottery sales will go towards funding for roads and infrastructure in the state, with future funds going towards good causes related to education in the state.
Retailers across the state are now being invited to submit applications to become agents for the new Mississippi Lottery, although with online lotto sales available from launch, it’s expected that the new operator will have a higher proportion of internet lotto sales than other official state lottery operators.
